About moisture sensors

Benefits & Features

Sensoterra’s soil moisture sensors are designed to address water challenges head-on. They give you interpreted soil moisture data, allowing you to understand when to start and stop irrigation without having to be a soil expert. Our soil moisture sensors are 100% wireless, easily installed, and free of maintenance! All the data is simply integrated into your existing platform. We help you make sense of water!

Different lengths for different purposes

Measurements can be taken in the active root zone, capillary zone, or even at the groundwater zone. With 99% data accuracy, the probes are suitable for all soil types, including clay, clay-loam, saline clay, sand, and peat. Custom calibrations are available on request.

Our sensors are durable, weather-resistant, and require no maintenance—designed to remain in the field for extended amounts of time. Installation is quick and easy. The sensors can be easily relocated and rapidly set up with monitoring networks.

Single Depth Sensor

Benefits & Features

Sensoterra’s single depth sensors provides clear soil moisture data. With calibrated data, you’ll know exactly when to start and stop irrigation. The sensors are 100% wireless, maintenance-free and easy to install. The data is designed for seamless integration into your platform. We help you make sense of water!

Multi-depth moisture sensor

Benefits & Features

Our new Multi Depth Sensor delivers the same robustness as our Single Depth sensors—just hammer it into the ground. No buttons, no screens, no fuss. The sensor comes with six soil moisture sensors in a single device, it provides moisture data at multiple depths.

This gives you a complete picture of soil conditions throughout the active root zone, helping you monitor plant health across the entire crop cycle. With multiple measurement points, you can also assess moisture levels across different soil horizons for more informed decision-making.

Meet our different soil moisture sensors:

See our
Single Depth sensor

Available at lengths of 15, 30, 60 & 90 cm

See our
Multi Depth sensor

One sensor, measuring at depths of 10, 20, 30, 45, 60 & 90 cm

Our soil sensors provide:

Active root zone

Getting data points at several depths let’s you measure soil moisture at the active root zone all through the crop cycle.

Varying soil profiles

With the Multi Depth sensor you can select different soil types at different depths, which allows you to get valuable insights all through the soil horizon.

Excellent connectivity

The Multi Depth sensor has an external antenna for visibility above the crop canopy. This significantly improves connectivity, and makes the Multi Depth sensor an excellent choice even for crops with large canopies.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Some frequently asked question about our moisture sensors:

1. How does a soil moisture sensor work?

The soil moisture sensor measure the volumetric water content of the soil. The measurements happen in two parts. Firstly an in-the-ground measurement and secondly an in-the-cloud calibration. After placing the sensors in the ground the system reads the soil moisture every hour and sends the data over to the cloud. Finally, the measurement data will be matched with the selected soil type to provide actionable data.

2. What are the applications of soil moisture sensors?

The applications of Sensoterra’s soil moisture sensors are endless:

Climate Resilient Cities & Landscaping: Implement remote monitoring to improve the quality of urban green, save water and reduce CO2.

Water & environmental monitoring: Balance the distribution, and manage freshwater resources with real-time soil moisture data.

Precision agriculture & irrigation control: Optimize irrigation, prevent input losses, and increase yield with 24/7 insights in plant available water.

3. How are soil moisture sensors powered?

Sensoterra’s soil moisture sensors are powered by an internal lithium battery (built-in) with an operating voltage of 3.0V. Because the sensors hardly use any energy (due to the LoRA network) the life expectancy is 6-8 years.

4. How long do Sensoterra’s sensor work?

The moisture sensor has a life expectancy of 6 to 8 years.

5. How to calibrate calibrate moisture sensors?

After installation you can pick the the soil type in the app. Sensoterra calibrates the sensor measurements for many different soil types to make the data you view in the app, web monitor and the push notifications you set up more useful.

6. What is the range of the soil moisture sensor?

The guaranteed range from probe to gateway is 4 kilometers line of sight. Please be aware that obstacles between probe and gateway may decrease the range, and optimal conditions will increase the range.

7. Where are soil moisture sensors used?

Our European made sensors are deployed in more than 40 countries worldwide.

8. How much area can a soil moisture sensor cover?

Depending on the sensor of choice, soil can be measured at 10cm/ 4 inches, 20cm / 8 inches, 30cm / 12 inches, 45cm / 18 inches, 60cm / 24 inches and 90cm / 35 inches depth.

9. What do soil moisture sensors measure?

Our single depth sensors measure the volumetric water content of the soil.

Our multi depth sensors measure the volumetric water content of the soil at 6 different depths. Additionally, this sensor can also measure temperature.
