What is a soil moisture sensor?

A soil moisture sensor is a small in-ground device that measures how much water is present in the soil at a chosen depth. Sensoterra's version takes an hourly reading and uses AI to calibrate it to your soil type, so you get a moisture value you can act on instead of a raw number you have to interpret yourself.

How does a soil moisture sensor work?

Each sensor takes an hourly in-ground reading and sends it to the cloud, where it's matched against your selected soil type to turn a raw signal into an actionable moisture value.

How long does a sensor last?

Sensors run on a single internal battery for roughly 5 to 10 years under normal use, thanks to the low-power LoRaWAN network.

How does auto-calibration work?

Every reading is auto-calibrated by AI against a library of more than 50 soil types based on your selected soil, and it keeps checking itself as conditions change. No manual calibration required.

What's the range to the gateway?

Typically 1–10 km, depending on terrain and any obstacles between the sensor and the receiving LoRaWAN gateway.
